WE REMEMBER TOGETHER...

John Clarke, MD, general, cardiothoracic, vascular and trauma surgeon, 1935 - 2024, a great man, a great physician, universally admired for his patient care, compassion, kindness, surgical prowess, and love for his fellow man, family and colleagues. Born in Nashville, TN, and after attending Maury High School, he received extensive training at multiple universities including Johns Hopkins, Otis Air Force Base, University of Virginia and Medical College of South Carolina among others. He served as a leader of many local organizations and was a faculty member at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He loved to teach and was a mentor for many medical students and young physicians. He and his family were active in the United Methodist Church. He loved music, traveling, windsurfing, and wood-working, not to mention UVA basketball. Most of all, he was known and greatly revered for his kindness, and concern for others. He also did a great impersonation of Abe Lincoln!

Karl K. Wallace, MD, Radiology. (passed November 2022).  Received his MD degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed Radiology fellowship at Duke University and came to Virginia Beach in the 1960s.  He served as chief of radiology at SVBGH for 28 years.  He went on to become a professor after this at the University of Virginia and is greatly appreciate by his friends and family.

William Gough, MD, Rheumatology (passed November 2021)  Bill was born  in Hampton Virginia. He was a graduate of Hampton High School, University of Virginia (‘62) and the University of Virginia Medical School. During his time at UVA, Bill was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and the Raven Society. After an internship and residency at Cornell University Medical Center, he completed a postdoctoral Arthritis Foundation Fellowship in Rheumatology.  Bill served as president of the Norfolk Academy of Medicine, Sentara Norfolk Hospitals Medical Staff, Seaboard Medical Society and Prime Plus Senior Center.

Robert Mosby, MD, Pediatrics (passed June 2021)  Born and raised in Newport News, Virginia and was a graduate of Newport News High School in 1953. He attended the University of Richmond (1957) and the Medical College of Virginia (1961). Bob completed his internship at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Ohio (1962) and his residency in pediatrics at M.C.V. in 1964.  He spent his first two years of medical practice as a Captain in the Air Force and Chief of Pediatrics at Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma.  In the mid 1960's, Dr. Mosby became a founding partner with N. Turner Gray, M.D. of Atlantic Pediatric Specialists. He retired after 40 years of service to the community from the same practice where he launched his medical career continuing serving the Hampton Roads community for over 40 years

Berton W. Ashman, MD, Gastroenterology (passed March 2017)  Grew up in Norfolk and was a proud graduate of Maury High School where he was salutatorian of his 1955 class. He attended the College of William & Mary where he was awarded the Lord Botetourt Medal for distinguished academic achievement and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He received his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. After serving his internship and residency at the University of Virginia and completing a fellowship at Yale, he returned home in 1969 to become the first gastroenterologist in the area. He subsequently founded Gastroenterology, Ltd. and the Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit at Virginia Beach General Hospital. He practiced medicine for 37 years before retiring in 2006.

Clarke Russ, MD, Orthopedic Surgery (passed March 2016)  Born in Dayton, Ohio, he was educated at Colgate University and Albany Medical College of Union University. He pursued his post-graduate training at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, where he completed a five-year residency in Orthopaedic Surgery. He served two years as a medical officer in the Army Medical Corps in Korea and Fort Belvoir, Virginia.  He practiced Orthopaedic Surgery in Norfolk and Virginia Beach for 30 years where he served the medical community, including as Director of the Medical Society of Virginia and President of the Orthopaedic Society of Virginia. He also served nine years as a member of the Virginia State Board of Medicine, with one year as its president in 1999.

Chu Hon Yi, MD, Cardiology/GP (passed March 1995) Dr. Yi, a general practitioner and cardiologist, trained at a top medical college in Seoul, South Korea, and completed his residency in the United States. He moved to Virginia Beach in the early 1970s and built a thriving practice.  Caring for others was also part of life for he and his wife, Kei Wol.  They passed in Russia where they were administering care and ministry to an indigent Korean population.
