John J. Krueger, MD was a physician who stood out among other all other physicians for more than 30 years at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. A true medical professional, he served the patients and the physicians who relied on his expertise with utmost distinction from 1964-1996.

In those days, as physicians discussed particularly complex medical cases, a frequent question that would come up was, "What does Dr. Krueger think about it?" General physicians, oncologists, surgeons would often go to his office in the Pathology Department and review slides with him and talk about cases directly. He had an innate ability to synchronize patients with pathology and provide astute observations that would help doctors manage their care. Many patients knew him as well and would call him with their concerns about family members who had been ill in the hospital. He was always accommodating and helpful.

He was so revered by patients and physicians alike, that after he died, a foundation was formed with funding provided by his many friends and colleagues. And so, the John J. Krueger, MD Foundation was founded in 1997 and has continued to serve the Virginia Beach medical community since then by furthering the educational, philanthropic and collegial goals that he promoted during his lifetime. Through this Foundation, and in his name, we continue to encourage scholarship, professionalism, and community service. Inspired by his mentorship and leadership, we strive to provide and promote the highest quality of medical care attainable for our citizens and their families.

Vision

The John J. Krueger, M.D. Foundation strives to further the educational, philanthropic, and collegial efforts of the Virginia Beach medical community. By promoting scholarship, professionalism, and community service as the late Dr. John J. Krueger inspired us to do, we hope to promote and expand the highest quality of medical care we can provide.

Every year, the John J. Krueger Foundation reminds us of these many qualities inspired in us by Dr. Krueger and honors him with an Annual Dinner, a keynote lecture by a nationally recognized speaker, and provision of multiple awards, including one given to the Physician of the Year, nominated and selected by the all-volunteer John J. Krueger Committee for clinical excellence and community service. All Virginia Beach physicians , guests, and members of the hospital auxiliaries are invited and it is open to the community at large.

Proceeds from the Annual Dinner along with public and private donations are used to fund annual scholarships for EVMS medical students along with nurses and technicians in the Sentara Healthcare System. The Krueger endowment continues to generate annual resources in order to help fund these scholarships and medical charity contributions. Donations are tax deductible through the Sentara Foundation. We are most grateful to our supporting organizations as well including TowneBank and Kaufman & Canoles.
